2022 Wildlife Trust Project
Proposed management plan for consideration of Bronze Award in conjunction with the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust. Feb 2022.
The Parochial Church Council became involved in this project due to the passion for wildlife and conservation of local resident, 13-year-old Emily Ward, who chose this project to be part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Contact was made with the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust who, in response to our request, visited our churchyard in November 2021. Their report on this visit formed the basis of our management plan.
In order to encourage all types of wildlife, we have carried out (or plan to carry out) several alternative features to improve the diversity of birds, plants, insects and other animals in our churchyard. Grass areas are to be mown in a different way, with some areas left to naturalise. A compost area has been established and two bug hotels built. Bird boxes and insect boxes are spread around the site and lavender has been planted around the bench. Snowdrops, aconites, foxgloves, primroses and mullein have been planted in various areas and log piles sited around the churchyard to encourage bugs, insects and small mammals.
The Wildlife Trust identified 35 different species of wildflowers and five different trees within the churchyard. A new tree is to be planted this year for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. At any time in the churchyard it is possible to see a variety of birds and regular visitors to the areas include red kites, buzzards, kestrels, ravens, wood pigeons, pied wagtails, blackbirds, greater spotted woodpeckers, goldfinches and swallows in summer.
